Jesse Carrier and Mara Miller, husband and wife principals at the New York City–based design firm Carrier and Company, might spend their days creating designs and executing installations for clients around Manhattan, but in the evening the two retreat to their bedroom, an atmosphere intentionally absent of computers, televisions, or other electronics. “Lately, with two small children, [we’ve realized] our bedroom is no longer a private retreat,” says Miller. “But it is the one place in our home and lives that is technology- and-mirror-free, [with] as little stimulation as possible.
