In 1957, The Four Preps penned the enduring lyrics, “Twenty-six miles across sea, Santa Catalina is a-waitin’ for me. Santa Catalina, the island of romance.” Although the group’s measurements were slightly inaccurate (the island is only twenty-two miles from the mainland), the song reached number two on the charts and reignited interest in the Southern California locale. The island, known casually as Catalina, is still surrounded by a fog of romanticism. With the exotic charm of Capri and the easygoing attitude of the Florida Keys, it has an accessible yet international appeal.
