When Sandra Espinet’s clients approached her about renovating their potential second home in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico, there was no hesitation. In spite of its outdated finishes and aesthetic, after taking one look at the stunning oceanfront property located in the upscale and ultra-private neighborhood of Villa del Mar, she gave the homeowners the green light to purchase the nearly 6,000-square-foot home. “They knew going in this was going to be a big renovation, but it is such an amazing lot and property that [I knew it would be] worth it,” says the designer, who splits her time between her homes in San Jose del Cabo and Los Angeles, California.
Located in the Puget Sound, and only a thirty-five-minute boat ride from Seattle, Washington, is Bainbridge Island. Originally the home of fishermen and farmers, the island has become a bedroom community for Seattle professionals. "The area still has that casual summer-home feel as the 25,000 residents take advantage of everything the Sound has to offer - beaches, beautiful water views, and a multitude of water sports and activities," says Scott Allen, owner of Scott Allen Architecture, Seattle and and Bainbridge Island, and a full-time island resident.
Working from afar has never been an obstacle for the designer, whose work has appeared in the pages of Architectural Digest. “I was in New York, the clients in LA, and the home in Hawaii, but it went very smoothly,” says Markatos Lowe, whose eponymous design firm has completed several projects on the island. “I was so familiar with the island [so working long distance wasn’t] as daunting as it might seem.”
